While many books about the stories of the hymns have been published in the past, none approaches in impact the coffee-table style book Abide With Me: A Photographic Journey Through the Great British Hymns, now available in autographed copies for those who order personally from author John H. Parker. Published by New Leaf Publishing Group, the book consists of three parts. |
|
First are the brilliant color photographs of the sites in England and Wales where the hymns were composed. They were taken in 2006-2008 by Professor Paul Seawright, chair of the Department of Photography at the University of Ulster in Ireland and award-winning international photographer with exhibits in Europe and America.
Next are articles describing the lives of the hymn writers and the sites in England and Wales where they lived. These articles are written by Professor Parker of the Department of English at Lipscomb University, who traveled with Professor Seawright to the sites. They picture what the reader would see and feel if he or she visits these beautiful, sometimes remote places.

Finally, the book includes a CD of the hymns featured in the volume, produced and mastered by celebrated singer Ray Walker of the Jordanaires, the man whose voice has been heard on recordings from an estimated eight billion sales, more than those of any other person in history. The Jordanaires were the back-up group for Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Ricky Nelson, and many famous entertainers. Several of the hymns are the inspiring recordings of Ray himself singing such great classics as “Amazing Grace,” “Rock of Ages,” “Abide With Me,” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” while others are by excellent American choral groups, including the Harding University Concert Choir. |
